(aka Boom Gates for Schools)
Providing a safe and secure learning environment for students presents a crucial issue for all schools.
Schools throughout Australia are continuously putting effort into reinforcing their security measures to ensure the safety of their most valuable asset – their students.
Such efforts range from: engaging in Conflict Resolution Training for staff and enhanced school lockdown procedures; through to undergoing active armed offender training and employing full-time security guards.
With such a wide range of options for schools, it can often be hard to know what solutions will be the most suitable for the security needs of your school. Despite the full range of options available on the market, it is still a fact that not all of them will be fit for the security needs of your property. The first, and most effective security treatment, however, is usually robust fencing combined with active access control such as automatic gates for pedestrian areas, and boom gates to vehicle control.
Whilst stationing a school security guard and installing CCTV also offers a heightened level of protection. Such options can prove costly and may create negative publicity if not installed in appropriate locations.
SECURITY ENTRANCE SYSTEMS
The ideal entry system would automatically record who enters and leaves the premises. Such systems allow enhanced visitor management too, visitors can be provided with an access card that allow them only into the areas of the campus they need to go. Coded ID’s for every student, staff, and parent can be helpful too. The codes should be modified on a bi-weekly basis; this represents appropriate identification before they gain access to enter the school premises.
INVESTING IN GOOD QUALITY BOOM GATES
Pedestrian access control is important, however, often vehicle access control measures are overlooked in schools. Whilst a security issue, as many schools are located in areas where parking spaces are at a premium, such as busy public transport hubs, effective access control such as boom gates reduces the risk of non-school related ‘visitors’ sneaking in some free parking.
Boom gates can also be linked to the schools main access control and CCTV systems allowing additional levels of security for staff and visitors and can avoid the common occurrence of ‘tailgating’, or an unauthorised vehicle following as staff member through the gates.
IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT INSTALLATION
Just as there are multiple options for security systems, there are multiple options for gate installation, the gates you decide to install will depend largely on your budget, the architecture of your premises, the topography and the access to services such as power and data. So it is crucial that with a large investment comes a great deal of design and planning.
